About PACSOI
The PACSOI consortium—Faqir, Move-Up, Byteflies, AContrario and IDLab-UGent-imec—has worked on an innovative approach to overcome the current fragmentation of health data, with support from VLAIO and imec.icon. Health information is often scattered across multiple systems, applications, wearables and healthcare providers, resulting in the absence of a complete and integrated patient view.
PACSOI developed a patient-driven ecosystem for the secure sharing, management and analysis of health data across different systems. Citizens remain in control of their data and decide how it is used and shared.
This was achieved through five complementary innovations:
- Data integration: transforming multimodal health data into interoperable Linked Data.
- Storage optimisation: enabling efficient, scalable and transparent data retrieval.
- Privacy and security: applying advanced encryption and privacy-preserving technologies.
- Dynamic consent: developing a legal framework and policy language for patient-controlled data management.
- Federated analytics and insights: supporting real-time, privacy-preserving analysis of distributed data.
The developed solution enables the secure integration, management and analysis of diverse health data sources, ranging from clinical records to data generated by sensors and mobile applications. PACSOI therefore supports improved patient care while facilitating the secure and GDPR-compliant reuse of health data for research and policymaking.
As a demonstration, a proof of concept was developed around obesity and related conditions. It combines data from multiple sources to better support healthcare professionals and patients in making treatment and lifestyle decisions.
